Springfield / Franconia Business Area Information:
The Springfield / Franconia area is centered on the intersection of the Capital Beltway (I-495), Interstate 95 and Shirley Highway (I-395). In addition to an outstanding road network, Springfield has excellent mass transit options. The Franconia-Springfield station of Metrorail's Blue Line terminates at the Joe Alexander Transportation Center. The center also serves as a station for the Virginia Railway Express (VRE), Greyhound and the TAGS bus service, which servers greater Springfield. A second Metrorail station serving the area, Van Dorn Street, is located just over the county line in the City of Alexandria, and the VRE Manassas Line also has a station at Backlick Road in northern Springfield.
Thanks to its central location, the Springfield / Franconia area contains more than 22 million square feet of commercial development, one of the largest concentrations in Fairfax County. Nearly 4.4 million square feet of office space is located in Springfield and Franconia. Office buildings vary from townhouse condominiums to high-rise buildings.

The Engineer Proving Ground (Ft. Belvoir North), just south of Springfield and a satellite location of Fort Belvoir, is the site of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA)'s 2.4 million-square-foot New Campus East complex, which is currently under construction. The campus is a consolidation of existing NGA facilities in Fairfax County, Maryland and Washington, D.C., that was mandated by the federal Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) action in 2005. Approximately 8,500 employees will be housed in the state-of-the-art complex by the September 2011 deadline established under BRAC. They are part of the 19,000 military and civilian workers expected to relocate at Fort Belvoir's main post on Richmond Highway and to Springfield and the City of Alexandria as part of the BRAC provisions. It is also home to the Northern Virginia Community College's Medical Education Campus and the Inova HealthPlex Emergency Care Center - Springfield.
